Hi, I'm Wendy — founder and maker behind Roots of Earth Co.

I started Roots of Earth Co. in 2022, in Sonoma County, California, out of a straightforward frustration: I wanted the calm of the outdoors inside my home, and every living plant I brought in eventually asked for more than I could give it.

Preserved moss solved that. It's real botanical material, preserved so it keeps its color and softness without water, light, or pruning. It works in a windowless office, on a mantel that gets no sun, in a room nobody has time to tend. That's the whole idea.

How the Work Is Made

Every piece is built by hand here in Sonoma County. We carve, stain, and finish the vessels, then place the moss piece by piece — there is no mold and no template, which is why no two arrangements are identical.

We work in paulownia and teak, hand-carved dough bowls, concrete we cast ourselves, aluminum, ceramic, and resin. Wood is left unfinished or stained black, dark walnut, antique white, gray, or mahogany.

The Design Philosophy

Restraint, mostly. Moss is already interesting — the texture does the work, so the vessel should be quiet and the arrangement should look like it happened rather than like it was engineered.

We build low and long for dining tables, because a centerpiece nobody can see over is a centerpiece nobody keeps. We choose finishes that sit alongside furniture rather than competing with it. And we let natural variation stand: wood grain, moss color, the odd asymmetry. Those are the parts that make a handmade piece read as handmade.

Beyond the Home

Our work isn't only for living rooms. Pieces we've made have been specified by interior designers and hotel stylists for hospitality interiors — including the Sheraton Boston and other Sheraton properties, AC Hotels, and Hilton locations. The same qualities that make preserved moss easy at home make it practical at scale: no water, no light, no upkeep, and years of life in high-traffic spaces. See Trade & Commercial.

Before This

I spent over twenty years in lending, closing loans — work that put me inside a great many homes. You learn what a room needs. You also learn how quickly a beautiful thing becomes a chore if it needs constant attention. Both of those turned out to be useful.

A Note on the Materials

All moss is real and preserved — never plastic or silk. It needs no water and no light, holds up for eight to ten years indoors with proper care, and carries a mild natural scent for the first few days after unpacking. It is made for indoor display, away from direct sun and moisture.
