Every office has a graveyard. A row of pots by the lift, a fiddle-leaf fig in reception that someone bought with good intentions, an orchid on the front desk that has been dead since March but nobody wants to be the one to bin it.
Commercial interiors are hard on plants for three reasons, and they're all structural.
Why Plants Fail in Offices
There isn't enough light. Boardrooms are often internal. Reception desks sit away from windows. Open-plan floors are lit for screens, not photosynthesis.
Nobody owns the watering. It's no one's job, so it's everyone's job, so it doesn't happen. Then someone overcorrects and drowns it.
Nobody wants a maintenance contract. Plant services are a recurring line item that gets cut in the first budget review.
Preserved moss sidesteps all three. It needs no light, no water, and no staff time — so the piece that goes in on install day looks the same in year five.
Where It Works Best
Boardroom and Conference Tables
A long, low centerpiece down the middle of a conference table is the most common commercial piece we make. The important constraint is height: anything above five inches interrupts sightlines across the table, which matters more in a meeting than at dinner.
Our shallower pieces — wood runners at 3 inches, or low metal vessels at 1 inch — are designed to stay under the line of sight.
Match the length to the table, not the room: roughly half to two-thirds of the table's length.
Reception and Lobbies
This is where wall art earns its place. A moss panel behind a reception desk reads as considered in a way a print doesn't, and it can carry a logo without looking like signage.
Groups of three at mixed diameters generally look better on a large wall than one piece alone.
Restaurants, Tasting Rooms, and Hotels
Long communal tables, bar backs, and window ledges. The advantage here is durability under handling — preserved moss doesn't bruise, drop leaves into food, or need moving for cleaning.
Desks and Small Spaces
For individual desks or hot-desking areas, small pieces work better than one large one. Ceramic moss bowls at 5 inches sit beside a monitor without taking the desk over.
Specification Notes
If you're speccing for a project, the things people usually ask:
- Real preserved botanical material, not artificial
- No irrigation, drainage, or lighting requirement
- Indoor only, away from direct sunlight and moisture
- Typical display life 8–10 years indoors with proper care
- Mild natural scent for the first few days after unpacking
- Colour and texture vary between pieces — matched sets are made together to minimise it
To be straightforward about what it doesn't do: preserved moss isn't alive, so it has no effect on air quality. What it offers is the visual and tactile presence of something natural in rooms that otherwise have none.
Lead Times and Volume
Commercial work runs 3–6 weeks depending on scale, longer for large installations. Matched sets are made together so colour and density stay consistent across a run.
Bring us in early if you're working to an install date — we'd rather tell you honestly that a date isn't achievable than miss it.
